Volunteering for Employment
Posted on 25/04/2008 at 16:06 by CVS Rochdale.

CVS Rochdale working with Rochdale Connections Trust and Groundwork Oldham and Rochdale

A project funded by Learning and Skills Council Northwest

What's the Project About?

It is designed to help those who take part in the project, to move out of unemployment via a spell as a volunteer. It aims to help them to use the skills and experienced gained by that voluntary work to improve their chances of getting paid employment. We will also help these volunteers to identify training or further education routes which can also help improve their employment prospects.

TAKING PART AND WORKING AS A VOLUNTEER

We are seeking committed individuals who are able to "sign up" to working as a volunteer in a suitable host organisation, for a period of not less than 3 months.

If you join the project you will be expected to work as a volunteer for up to 35 hours a week (actual hours will be agreed between you, the host organisation and the project manager as needed).

A significant number of hours per week as a volunteer is needed, to give you enough in-depth experience which you can then draw on to "sell" yourself to possible employers and to get a paid job.

We will provide you with initial training as a volunteer before you start the volunteer work, plus we will give you the chance to gain a qualification in voluntary work if you wish to take up that option.

During the volunteer work we will also take you through an 'employability skills' course designed to help you to identify the key skills you are using, which are sought after by employers - these are: communicating with others at work; dealing effectively with customers; solving problems when they occur; and being an effective member of teams at work. We will help you to "sell" yourself to employers by telling them about these skills and how you are using them.

Part of this course will be the Team Manager Development programme, leading to a certificate from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) which is designed to improve your skills in working as an effective team member in any organisation.

Throughout the whole time with the project you will be supported by a personal mentor - someone who is trained in mentoring and who is there to help you, to advise you, to guide you, to listen to your problems and issues.

We will also help you to identify other training, education, work placements and so on to further improve your prospects in the job market.

HOW WILL THE VOLUNTEERS BE CHOSEN AND WHAT SUPPORT WILL THEY GET FROM THE PROJECT?

Interviews and selection plus volunteer training

Applicants will be interviewed to discuss their aims and needs, and we are seeking to take 12 people onto the project and to place them in volunteer work which is as relevant as possible to their interests and to the type of work they are seeking.

Being a Mentor

We are seeking committed individuals who can provide one-to-one mentor support on a volunteer basis for the delegates who enter this programme.

If you become a mentor we will ask you to give (typically 1-2 hours a week to work with your mentee, to provide underlying personal support to help them make a success of their time on this project.

We will provide training in mentoring skills; and you will have the chance to obtain a qualification in mentoring as a result of this work (thought taking the qualification is optional and will be entirely your choice).

The mentoring work will use a mixture of direct meetings, telephone and email contact and such contact can be arranged between you and your mentee at times and on dates, to suit both your needs.

We will ask you to maintain brief records of the mentoring process and what is discussed, and those records would also form the basis of the qualification evidence if you choose to take it.

At all stages you will be supported by the Project Manager who is herself a qualified and experienced mentor.

Necessary costs such as travel will be paid.

This is a chance for you to give something back to society - to use your experience and knowledge to help another person to get over the barriers, ot help them get out of unemployment and to get into the mainstream of paid work and earnings.

BEING A HOST ORGANISATION AND TAKING IN A VOLUNTEER

We are seeking organisations that can provide placements for the volunteers who take part in this project.

The volunteer will work with you for a minimum of 3 months.

During that time s/he will be supported by a trained personal mentor who is there to help him/her with the transition from unemployment, into voluntary work and then into paid work and/or further education and/or other training.

We will ask you to provide a reasonably varied and structured placement that will enable the volunteer to gain and to use a range of skills which are of key importance when it comes to employment. These are: communications with others at work; spotting and resolving problems as they occur; working as an effective team member; and providing a good service to customers (who may be external clients or other, internal, staff in the organisation).

We will provide the volunteers with initial training in being a volunteer, before they enter into the placement with you.

During their time with you they will also receive "employability" training to help them use the above key skills to gain paid work. That will include an accredited Team Member Development programme which is designed to help them work more effectively as team members in any organisation.

At all stages the whole process will be managed by a Project Manager who is herself a qualified and experienced mentor and who will ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Rochdale Citizen Advocacy
Posted on 31/03/2008 at 17:40 by CVS Rochdale.

Rochdale Citizen Advocacy

We are looking to match up volunteers from Heywood, Rochdale and Middleton to advocate for people who have learning difficulties.

We recruit and support competent citizens to support people who are often excluded from the community. Through this advocacy relationship vulnerable individuals gain a voice, become more independent and will have more choice in their lives.

If you are a person with a long term learning disability who needs hlep to access your rights, gain more independence and have more choice about how you wish to live then get in touch.

If you wish to become an advocate and wnat to make a difference by speaking up for/with a vulnerable person then contact us.

You can and do make a difference as an advocate. For example, our successful advocates have helped get a person out of institutions, enabled people to decide about accommodation options and make choices about the services they receive. Advocates have introduced them to new friends and develop existing and new interests.
